Field Hockey Preview: Bobcats Encouraged by Off-Season Improvements, Ready to Take On the NESCAC

2022 Bates Field Hockey Schedule

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bates field hockey program knew something needed to change after their 4-0 loss to No. 1 Middlebury in the NESCAC quarterfinals last fall. Head coach Dani Kogut, who is entering her tenth season, felt the fitness of the team needed to improve and is already seeing positive results this fall after a scrimmage on Saturday against No. 4 nationally ranked Tufts.

"We have a very driven team who came in fit and ready for the 2022 season," Kogut said "Improved fitness has been a huge focal point, and the team showed their strides this past weekend when we took on the pre-season fourth ranked team in a scrimmage. It was a great game, with a lot of positives to take away."

The field hockey program will look to fill the role of recent graduate Riley Burns '22 who was named first team All-Region last season, along with numerous other accolades. She was Bates' top scorer from the midfield position, tallying five goals and five assists in 16 games. Kogut isn't too worried about this task.
Our returnees are a very strong group, who have worked hard to improve both individually and as a team," Kogut said "They are the most driven group of individuals we have coached and make each day really exciting for our staff."

Co-captains Sarah Bussell (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and Paige Cote (Auburn, Maine) will lead the program this season. Bussell was a steady presence on the field last year, appearing in all 16 games and starting 15 of them. Cote guided the offense last season, accumulating the most points with 19. In the 16 games she had seven goals and five assists.

"They have both poured their hearts into this program," Kogut said "As juniors and a half (both deferred during the pandemic), they have already impacted the program in many positive ways. They are key to the team's on-field success, excellent role models academically, and great representatives of our team's values."

Bussell and Cote will be joined by goalkeeper Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) who started all 16 games this past season for the Bobcats and recorded 51 saves.

In addition, junior Lauren Salazar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and sophomores Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) and Amanda Zerbib (Larchmont, N.Y.) will look to continue to contribute this season. Salazar is an experienced veteran, playing all 16 games last season and starting 15 of them. Zerbib and Anna Cote both excelled during their first season, playing 14 games and starting five of them. Anna Cote scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the University of New England while Zerbib held down the defensive end, helping the Bobcats shut out four opponents last season. The Bobcats also welcome six first-years who are looking to make an immediate impact.

Kogut is excited for the new season to begin.

"Our team is full of life and really fun," Kogut said "I enjoy the opportunity to spend time with them out on the field each day. The season could never be long enough in my opinion so when it is here, it's time to focus on and enjoy it."

The Bobcats travel to the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday for their first regular season game starting at 7pm. They will host No. 6 nationally ranked Bowdoin in their home opener on Saturday at 11am on Campus Avenue Field. Their home opener will be dedicated to spreading awareness about Suicide Prevention, as it is World Suicide Prevention Day. They will be collecting donations on behalf of the Trevor Project.
