LEWISTON, Maine -- Five different Bobcats found the back of the cage and the Bates field hockey team defeated Denison 6-0 Sunday morning at Campus Avenue Field.
With the win, Bates improves to 3-0 for the first time since 2006. Denison falls to 1-2 on the year.
Sophomore
Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) led the way for the Bobcats on Sunday, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist as well. Her older sister junior captain
Paige Cote (Auburn, Maine) tallied a pair of assists in the contest.
Anna Cote got the scoring started in the fourth minute. She received a pass in the circle from
Paige Cote. Then she wiggled around a couple defenders and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the cage, putting Bates up 1-0.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the 21st minute when first-year
Emma Queen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) delivered a perfect pass up ahead where junior
Ella Blum (South Salem, N.Y.) had snuck behind the defense. Blum received the pass in the left side of the circle, made a move forward and fired a backhanded shot that deflected into the cage for the 2-0 Bates lead.
In the 27th minute, sophomore
Jessie Bard (Larchmont, N.Y.) was able to collect a loose ball and deliver a shot from the left side of the circle for her first collegiate goal, extending the edge to 3-0.
With time winding down in the first half, the Bobcats earned a penalty corner. First-year
Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg (Winchester, Mass.) delivered the insert and
Paige Cote passed the ball to
Anna Cote on the left side. Cote's shot deflected off a Denison player and into the cage as time expired for her second goal of the day.
With Bates up 4-0 at the half, the Bobcats and Big Red played a scoreless third quarter. Then in the 55th minute, Moloney-Kolenberg scored her first collegiate goal when
Paige Cote ripped a shot from the top of the circle and the rookie tipped it home.
A few minutes later, sophomore
Maria Femia (Canton, Mass.) scored her third goal in as many games when
Anna Cote crossed it to Femia in front of the cage and Femia tipped it in for the sixth tally of the day for Bates.
The Bobcats tallied 23 shots in the contest and held Denison to just two shots. Bates earned nine penalty corners to Denison's one.
First-year
Kaili Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) played the first 30 minutes in goal for Bates and senior
Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) played the final 30 minutes, recording a pair of saves down the stretch.
Athena Joannou made six saves for the Big Red and Rachel Gilio recorded a defensive save.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday evening when they host No. 7 nationally ranked Babson at 6pm.
