Baseball splits twin bill with Bowdoin on Senior Day

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Antonio Jareno collected four hits and drove in four runs on Senior Day as the Bates baseball team split a doubleheader with rival Bowdoin Saturday at Leahey Field.

The Bobcats (7-25, 2-10 NESCAC) are back in action Wednesday when they host Husson at 3pm.

Game One: Bates 11, Bowdoin 3

The Bobcats scored seven runs in the third inning to take the lead for good in an 11-3 win over Bowdoin in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

With Bates trailing 3-0, sophomore Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) got the offense going in the third with an infield single to third base. Sophomore Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) followed with an infield single of his own and junior Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) bunted his away aboard, loading the bases with nobody out.

Sophomore Christopher Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) lofted a pitch from Bowdoin starter Jack Mullen (5-2) over the head of the left fielder, scoring Jankowski and Brennan and cutting the Polar Bear lead to 3-2.

Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) followed with a single up the middle, driving in Fallon and tying the game at three.

One out later, junior Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) singled through the left side and Cimino scored the go-ahead run. Senior captain Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) followed wth an RBI single to plate Jareno and Bates led 5-3.

A Bowdoin error allowed two more runs to score for the Bobcats.

Senior Braden Karess (Boxborough, Mass.) got the start for the Bobcats and tossed three and a third innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three. He left with the lead and one out in the top of the fourth with a runner on. Junior Sam Hough (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) entered the game and the Bobcats immediately turned a double play, ending the frame.

Hough (3-0) tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn the win.

The Bobcats added one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Fallon and Cimino singled to start the frame. Then Jareno singled home Fallon for the 8-3 lead.

With one out in the fifth, Brennan got hit by a pitch. He stole second and later scored on a Bowdoin error. Jareno recorded his third hit of the game and junior Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) singled home a run before Jamieson capped off the scoring with an RBI single of his own.

The Bobcats tallied 13 hits in game one to Bowdoin's nine. Senior LHP Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y) recorded the final two outs of the game for the Bobcats.

Game Two: Bowdoin 17, Bates 4

Ben McKenzie went 6-6 at the plate to lead the Polar Bears past the Bobcats by a final score of 17-4 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Bowdoin (15-17, 8-4 NESCAC) scored five runs in the third and five more in the fifth to pull away from the Bobcats.
