HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates men's tennis team battled Trinity in a close contest Sunday in NESCAC action, falling 5-3 to the Bantams.
Trinity (4-4, 1-2 NESCAC) won all three doubles matches, which proved to be key as the Bobcats (3-6, 1-3 NESCAC) rallied in singles play.
Sophomore
Alexander Gujarathi (Plymouth, Mass.) defeated Trinity's Henry Bilicic 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 2 singles and junior
Leo Kupferman (Montclair, N.J.) won in straight sets as well, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles over Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion.Â
Meanwhile, sophomore
Alexander Archer (Austin, Texas) made things really interesting with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Dylan Powell at No. 6 singles.
But a pair of three-set wins for the Bantams was enough to clinch the match. Junior captain
Nick Forester (Falmouth, Maine) fell at No. 1 singles to Ross Derose by a count of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) and sophomore
Matthew Danielson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) came up just short at No. 4 singles in a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) loss to Trinity's Jack Ginter.
Due to time constraints and Trinity having narrowly clinched the match, the No. 5 singles match between junior captain
Teddy Koide (Morristown, N.J.) and Charles Kilborn was not completed. The two split the first two sets and Kilborn led 3-0 in the third when it was suspended.Â
The Bobcats return to action next Sunday at 2pm when they visit Wesleyan.
