LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore
Alexander Gujarathi won at No. 1 doubles and singles in the Bates men's tennis team's 6-3 loss to No. 9 nationally ranked Bowdoin Wednesday at Merrill Gymnasium.
Gujarathi (Plymouth, Mass.) teamed with fellow sophomore
Matthew Danielson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) to defeat Bowdoin's Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples 8-7 (1) at No. 1 doubles. Bates (3-10, 1-7 NESCAC) shined in doubles play, with sophomore
Nikesh Desai (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior
Leo Kupferman (Montclair, N.J.) winning an 8-7 (4) battle against Jack Flores and Evan Fortier, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead headed into singles play.
Gujarathi continued his strong play in singles action, dropping the first set before rallying to beat Tristan Bradley 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) at the top of the lineup.
But Bates sorely missed junior captains
Nick Forester (Falmouth, Maine) and
Teddy Koide (Morristown, N.J.) as Bowdoin (15-2, 7-1 NESCAC) swept the other five singles matches to defeat the Bobcats.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday morning when they host Amherst at 10am.
