Women's lacrosse drops close road contest to Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bates women's lacrosse team got off to a fast start but the host Connecticut College Camels rallied to take the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter, defeating the Bobcats 12-10 Saturday afternoon in a game hosted by the Coast Guard Academy.

Senior Jordyn Tveter (Topsfield, Mass.) led the way for Bates (3-9, 1-8 NESCAC) with a pair of goals and six ground balls. She also caused a turnover. Tveter scored the first goal of the game as the Bobcats raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Senior captain Dana Swartz (North Andover, Mass.) added a pair of goals of her own in the opening quarter of action.

The Camels (6-7, 1-7 NESCAC) rallied with three unanswered tallies, cutting the Bates lead to one at 4-3 with 14:23 to go in the second quarter.

Bates kept Conn. at arm's length for most of the contest, going up 8-5 on a goal from senior Kate Loughlin (York, Maine) with 10:01 remaining in the third quarter.

This time, it was the Camels' turn to go on a 4-0 run, taking a 9-8 lead over Bates on a Kelly Wolin goal with 10:06 left in regulation. Tveter answered just moments later to tie the game at nine. But the Camels took the lead for good with 9:16 on the clock when Aine Downey scored a player-up goal. Wolin and Julianna Ingrassia added insurance tallies down the stretch.

Wolin finished with a game-high four goals and Emma Ognibene added three for the Camels.

Violette Nidds made 16 saves on 26 chances in the cage while junior Cammie Lavoie (Epping, N.H.) made 15 saves on 27 chances for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, April 27 at 7pm when they host Colby at Garcelon Field.
