WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates offense couldn't get going in a doubleheader Saturday at Colby, with the Bobcats falling 9-0 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
The Bobcats (6-19, 1-7 NESCAC) return to action next Saturday for a doubleheader at Wesleyan, with first pitch of game one set for 1pm.
Game One: Colby 9, Bates 0
Jack Bohrer and John Doyle combined to one-hit the Bobcats in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, with the Mules winning 9-0.
Senior captain
Kevin Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) recorded the only hit of the game for Bates, a two-out single in the top of the fourth.
By that time, the Mules already had a 6-0 lead, as they scored two in the second and four in the third. Marcus Forrester (3-4, 3 runs scored) and Brady O'Brien (2-3, 1 run scored, two doubles, two RBIs, and a walk) had big days at the top of the order for Colby. Charlie Furlong tripled in two runs in the second, putting the Mules ahead for good.
Bates never threatened on offense, failing to get a runner past first base in the contest. Bohrer (3-1) got the win for Colby with four innings of shutout ball while sophomore Cobin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats. McAlpine (0-2) pitched three and two thirds innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out four.
Game Two: Colby 5, Bates 1
The Mules scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away from the Bobcats in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, with Bates falling 5-1.
After allowing 10 hits in game one, the Bates pitching staff held the Mules to six hits in game two. But Forrester and O'Brien continued to do damage at the top of the lineup. Forrester went 1-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Meanwhile, O'Brien finished 3-4 with three doubles two RBIs.Â
Junior
Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) pitched really well through four innings, allowing just one run. But walks hurt Nelson (0-5) in the fifth. He walked Furlong and Genki LeClair to start the frame, and Forrester singled to load the bases. O'Brien followed with one of his three doubles on the day, driving in two and making the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.
Another run scored on a double play before Nelson got Clint Flippo to strike out, ending the frame. Nelson matched his season-high with five K's on the afternoon.
Down 4-0, the Bobcats got a run back in the top of the sixth. Junior
Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) tripled to start the frame. Then junior
Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) drove in Fallon with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to three.
Nicholas Thompson (2-1) tossed seven innings of three-hit ball for Colby, allowing just one run while striking out seven to pick up the win.Â
