MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates men's tennis team took on No. 3 nationally ranked Tufts on the road Thursday, falling 9-0 despite a number of close matches.
In doubles play, sophomores
Nikesh Desai (Hopkinton, Mass.) and
Matthew Danielson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) gave the Tufts team of Paris Pentousis and Niko Hereford all they could handle at No. 3, falling in a tiebreaker 8-7 (2).
All three doubles teams kept it close against the Jumbos (10-1, 5-1 NESCAC), with juniors
Leo Kupferman (Montclair, N.J.) and
Teddy Koide (Morristown, N.J.) falling 8-5 at No. 2 and junior
Nick Forester (Falmouth, Maine) and sophomore
Alexander Gujarathi (Plymouth, Mass.) coming up short by a count of 8-4.
In singles play, Kupferman turned around a rough first set where he fell 6-0 to prevail 7-5 in the second set against Pentousis. But his opponent was able to win the third set by a count of 10-3. Tufts won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
Bates (3-8, 1-5 NESCAC) returns to action this Saturday when the Bobcats host Colby at 10am.
