Big second quarter allows No. 14 Wesleyan to pull away, defeating men's lacrosse 22-8

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Sophomores Jake Johnson and Wil Masterson tallied two goals apiece in the Bates men's lacrosse team's 22-8 loss to No. 14 nationally ranked Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) outscored the Bobcats (0-2, 0-1 NESCAC) 10-2 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead in the contest.

Wesleyan scored the first two goals of the afternoon before senior Walter Braun (Charlotte, Vt.) answered with one of his own, trimming the deficit to 2-1 with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter.

But the Cardinals followed with a 10-0 run that Masterson (York, Maine) broke up with a man-up goal on an assist from junior Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) with 6:50 left in the second quarter.

Masterson then assisted on a goal from sophomore Alex Horowitz (Los Angeles) with 5:46 left in the second, before Wesleyan ended the half on a 3-0 run.

Down 15-3 at the half, Bates played the Cardinals much more evenly over the final 30 minutes.

Senior Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.) opened the scoring in the third quarter, on an assist to senior captain Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) and Masterson tallied another man-up goal with 6:53 left in the third, keeping it a 12-goal margin.

The Cardinals ripped off four straight goals before Johnson (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) broke up the run with 12:27 left in the fourth quarter. Johnson scored again with 58 seconds left, as Bates scored three of the final four goals of the contest.

Justin Hazard and Pat Doherty scored four goals each to pace the Cardinals. Matt Gill added three goals and five assists. Spencer Robbins also recorded a hat trick.

Wesleyan won the ground ball battle 36-20 and the Cardinals won 23 of 34 face-offs.

Bates looks to bounce back Wednesday when the Bobcats welcome Western New England to Garcelon Field for the home opener at 4:30pm.
