LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches on the way to a 6-3 win over MIT Saturday afternoon at Merrill Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (2-4) got the day started with a win at No. 2 doubles, as junior
Leo Kupferman (Montclair, N.J.) and junior captain
Teddy Koide (Morristown, N.J.) teamed up to defeat MIT's Wayne Nelms and Sundeep Chakladar by a count of 8-3. Then sophomore
Aaron Ramos (Englewood, N.J.) and first-year
Paul Zhou (Beijing, China) won 8-3 over Daniel Antov and Benji Grossman at No. 3 doubles.
The No. 1 doubles match proved to be an epic battle, with Bates sophomores
Alexander Gujarathi (Plymouth, Mass.) and
Matthew Danielson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) prevailing 8-7 (7-5) over MIT's Daniel Papacia and Derek Shen.
In singles play, Kupferman got the Bobcats off to a strong start with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Antov at No. 3. Junior captain
Nick Forester (Falmouth, Maine) didn't compete in doubles play, leaving him well-rested for his No. 1 singles match, a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shen. Forester's victory clinched the match for the Bobcats.
Danielson also won in singles action, defeating MIT's Richter Jordaan in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
The Engineers (4-2) won the final three singles matches of the day but it took a third-set tiebreaker for them to win two of the matches, and Bates had already clinched the overall win at that point.
Bates travels to Skidmore this Thursday for non-conference match that gets underway at 5pm.
