BEVERLY, Mass. -- Senior captain
Dana Swartz scored five goals
and senior
Jordyn Tveter added four to lead the Bates women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win over Skidmore Tuesday night in a neutral site game on the campus of Endicott College.
Swartz (North Andover, Mass.) broke a 13-13 tie with two minutes remaining in regulation with her game-winning fifth goal of the night, an unassisted tally for the team captain.
The Bobcats (2-3) grabbed an early 4-0 lead but the Thoroughbreds (0-3) refused to back down.
Skidmore rallied and took a 9-7 lead on a Lily Schwartzman goal with 9:59 left in the third quarter. Schwartzman finished with a game-high six goals.
Down by two, Bates got one back thanks to an unassisted goal from first-year
Trish Balser (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter. Nevertheless, the Bobcats found themselves trailing entering the final quarter of action.
Swartz tallied the equalizer with 11:40 to go in regulation and senior
Kate Loughlin (York, Maine) gave Bates a 10-9 lead with 10:29 left.
Schwartzman answered less than two minutes later on an assist from Gabriella Modesti, knotting the score at 10 with 8:54 left.
The Bobcats took the lead again by taking advantage of a yellow card on the Thoroughbreds. First-year
Caroline Taggart (Concord, Mass.) found the back of the net, and on the ensuing draw control Tveter (Topsfield, Mass.) scored perhaps the most impressive goal of the game. She won the draw herself and raced down the field, faking a pass to her left to shake a defender and scoring while running at full speed, putting the Bobcats up 12-10 just nine seconds after Taggart's go-ahead tally.
Just over a minute later, Swartz scored her fourth goal of the evening and Bates appeared to be rolling, up 13-10 with only 6:35 left on the clock.
But Skidmore fought back again. The Thoroughbreds got a goal from Camille Pontone on an assist from Victoria Benanti. Then Schwartzman got them to within one on an assist from Lara Strunk with 5:16 left.
Skidmore got the equalizer from Pontone with 3:49 to go, as Maddy Marr assisted on the goal, making it a brand new ballgame.
But as she had all night, Swartz answered for Bates, putting the Bobcats ahead for good. Bates was able to hold on to the ball down the stretch to secure the one-point win.
The Bobcats out-shot Skidmore 46-31 on the evening. Bates earned 13 free position shots, converting six. Skidmore was 0-4 on free positions.
Junior
Cammie Lavoie (Epping, N.H.) played all 60 minutes in goal, picking up the win. She made 11 saves and recorded a team-high seven ground balls. Liv Kazanjian made 19 saves in the loss for Skidmore.
Bates is back in action Sunday when the Bobcats host Amherst at 12pm.
