Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Aaron Morse

Big second half carries men's basketball to 74-68 win over Connecticut College

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Simon McCormick scored a career-high 25 points and the Bates men's basketball team rallied for a 74-68 win over Connecticut College Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (8-8, 2-5 NESCAC) came back from down eight points at the half to defeat the Camels (8-8, 2-4 NESCAC) for the fourth straight time.

Trailing 45-37, the Bobcats got a layup from junior Omar Sarr (Dakar, Senegal) with 17:24 remaining in regulation, trimming the deficit to six. McCormick (Whitefield, Maine) followed with a three-pointer, quickly making the score 45-42. But Ben Rice answered with a three of his own and the teams went back-and-forth before another McCormick three tied the game at 52 with 11:46 on the clock.

Bates and Conn. College continued to trade buckets and with 3:37 to go, the Bobcats found themselves down 64-62 after a pair of Rice free throws. Fortunately for Bates, McCormick had the answer again, drilling another three-pointer and putting Bates ahead for good with 2:48 to play. He wasn't done, knocking down his career-high seventh three of the night less than a minute later, opening up a 68-64 lead for the home team.

The Bobcats sank their free throws the rest of the way for the final margin of victory.

McCormick made 9 of 17 shots from the floor and 7-14 from three. He also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded a steal. He has set new career-highs in scoring each of the last three games.

Junior captain Stephon Baxter (Worcester, Mass.) tallied 15 points on 5-12 shooting, dished out a game-high six assists and played lockdown defense with a game-high four steals. First-year Jahmir Primer (Hempstead, N.Y.) added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sarr finished with six points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Rice and Cam Schainfeld paced the Camels with 16 points apiece. Rice hit four three-pointers in 10 attempts and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jarron Flynn added 11 points and Andrew Hartel chipped in 10.

Connecticut College was hot from the field in the first half, shooting 58.06 percent from the floor. They also made four of eight from three-point range to start the game. But they cooled off in the second half, shooting at a 41.38% clip and only making 1-10 from three.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats drained seven three-pointers in the second half and 13 for the game, their best three-point shooting performance this season since a win over Husson on December 13, when they made 14 three-pointers.

Bates dominated the glass in the win, out-rebounding the Camels 48-31 and tallying 21 second chance points to Conn. College's five.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday afternoon when they host NESCAC foe Trinity at 3pm.
