Women's basketball defeats Hamilton 71-59 for third straight NESCAC win

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Mia Roy scored a game-high 25 points, junior Brianna Gadaleta recorded another double-double, and the Bates women's basketball team remained undefeated in NESCAC play with a 71-59 win over Hamilton Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.

The Bobcats (11-3, 3-0 NESCAC) are off to their best start in conference play since the 2005-06 season.

Roy (Bedford, N.H.) made five three-pointers on eight attempts to pace Bates. She made nine of 20 shots from the field overall, grabbed four rebounds and recorded two steals. Gadaleta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) tallied 10 points on 5-7 shooting and matched her season-high with 12 rebounds. It's her fourth consecutive double-double and sixth overall on the season for the Bobcats.

Junior captain Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) added 17 points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists, while sophomore Morgan Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) also finished in double figures with 11 points and four rebounds.

Kelcie Zarle paced Hamilton (6-7, 0-3 NESCAC) with 23 points on 10-24 shooting and Emma Sehring finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Claire Sehring chipped in 10 points for the Continentals.

A Zarle jumper with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter put Hamilton up 21-20 over the Bobcats. But Bates answered 30 seconds later with a Roy three and the Bobcats never trailed again.

Up by two with 4:02 left in the half, Bates went on a 7-0 run, keyed by a Gadaleta layup, a layup from senior captain Taylor McVeigh (Hanson, Mass.) and another Roy three-pointer.

The Bobcats took a 35-26 lead into the halftime locker room.

Hamilton got no closer than seven points the rest of the way. Bates led by as many as 16 in the second half on the way to victory.

The Bobcats made six of 17 three-pointers, three more than Hamilton, as the Continentals finished 3-12 from deep. Bates also made three more free throws than Hamilton, finishing 13-17 from the line to Hamilton's 10-14. The Bobcats dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Hamilton 44-27.

Second chance points continue to be key, with the Bobcats recording 16 on Saturday to Hamilton's two. Bates ranks first in the NESCAC in offensive rebounding, at 16.9 per game.

The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday at perennial NESCAC power Tufts (11-2, 2-1 NESCAC), with tip set for 3pm.
