STANDISH, Maine -- The Bates women's soccer team appeared headed toward its second scoreless tie of the week when Madison Michaud's goal with 1:39 remaining in first overtime shocked the Bobcats in a 1-0 non-conference loss at Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Sunday.
As the Bobcats did in their 0-0 tie at the University of New England on Wednesday night, they controlled the action for most of the game and outshot the opposition by a wide margin (35-10), but couldn't come up with any scores to show for their efforts.
Bates also had a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks over St. Joe's, but the host Monks (6-4) cashed in on the final one of the game. Kayley Mattos earned the assist when Michaud converted her corner kick into the game-winner. Mattos launched a perfect corner kick from the right side to the middle of the box, where Michaud was able to gain separation and headed into the top left corner of the net for her fourth game-winner and 10th goal overall this season.
Monks goalkeeper Adia Grogan made a whopping 23 saves to earn the shutout in her third shutout of the season. As the game played out, Grogan's biggest stop occurred in the 18th minute, when the senior netminder stonewalled a penalty kick attempt by junior midfielder
Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.), who aimed for the bottom right corner and was denied with a diving grab.
Bates first-year
Ruby Reimann (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) made her first collegiate start in goal, and held the Monks scoreless for over 98 minutes, with four saves to her credit.
Junior defender
Joanna Cloutier (Portland, Ore.) took nine shots and put eight of them on net, accounting for eight Grogan saves. Sophomore forward
Izzy Lussier (Suffield, Conn.) put four of seven shots on net, while junior midfielder
Elizabeth Patrick (Ipswich, Mass.) put three of seven and sophomore midfielder
Charlotte Jones (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) put three of five shots on net.
Bates (1-3-2) resumes NESCAC play on Saturday, Oct. 2 with a 12pm game at Tufts.
