BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior captain
Riley Burns tipped in a game-tying goal in the third quarter, but No. 11 nationally ranked Bowdoin answered with two more goals for a 3-1 NESCAC victory Tuesday night.
The Polar Bears struck first seven minutes into the second quarter. Faith Jennings worked the ball down the left and spun around back to the edge of the circle. Jennings centered a pass to Bailey Prete who put the ball away with a reverse sweep.
Bates evened the score just 48 seconds into the third quarter. Following a corner, first-year
Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) tracked down a rebound off a defender's stick and quickly pushed the ball toward the near left post, where Burns (Sterling, Mass.) got her stick on the ball for a tip-in. It was Burns' first goal of the season and Cote's second assist.
Bowdoin responded nine minutes later, as Abby Bashaw redirected an airborne ball into the cage. Then Jennings added an insurance goal three minutes into the final frame, carrying into the circle and sweeping the ball towards Jennings for a goal.
Bowdoin held a 14-6 shot advantage and 10-6 edge in corners. Maddie Ferrucci made three saves and Georgie Coetzer had a defensive save for the Polar Bears, while junior goalkeeper
Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) made five stops for Bates.
Bates next hosts Connecticut College for another NESCAC contest on Saturday at 12pm.
