Coyne hits first collegiate home run in baseball's loss at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior captain Colin Coyne gave the Bates baseball team the early lead with his first collegiate home run but the Colby College Mules scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to run away with a 9-1 victory over the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) stepped to the plate with one out in top of the third in a scoreless contest. He launched a pitch from Colby starter Elijah Cohen over the fence for a solo shot, his first collegiate homer in 47 at bats. The slick fielding infielder (zero career errors) finished the game 2-2 at the plate with a walk for Bates.

Colby (11-10) answered with an unearned run against Bobcat starting pitcher junior Braden Karess (Boxborough, Mass.) in the bottom of the third. Ryan Hecht reached on a Bates error and advanced to second on a bunt single by Charlie Furlong. The Mules bunted the runners over and Patrick McConnell drove in Hecht with a sacrifice fly to right field.

With the score tied at one, the Mules took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Cabot Maher solo home run off Karess, Maher's second home run of the season.

He wasn't done. Maher launched another homer in the bottom of the sixth to put the Mules up 3-1.

Bates (1-6) received a strong performance from Karess (0-2) through the first seven innings, keeping the game within reach. He struck out four batters through the first seven frames.

But the Mules ran away in the bottom of the eighth. McConnell led off with a walk and Brady O'Brien singled through the left side. Then Maher doubled home McConnell, chasing Karess from the game.

Colby eventually loaded the bases and Cole Palmeri cleared them, doubling home two, with a third run scoring due to a Bates error on the play.

When the dust cleared, a 3-1 Colby lead turned into a 9-1 advantage thanks to the six-run outburst.

Cohen (2-2) pitched five innings of one-run ball for the win, scattering five hits along the way. Frank Driscoll was dominant out of the bullpen, striking out four batters in three scoreless innings. The Bobcats only tallied one hit after the fifth inning, a two-out single by junior Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) in the top of the seventh.

Bates is back in action Sunday when the Bobcats host the Mules at 1pm.
