LEWISTON, Maine -- Six Bobcats scored in double figures and the Bates men's basketball team rolled to a 92-74 win over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday night in Alumni Gym.
Junior captain
Stephon Baxter (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Bobcats (2-2) for the fourth straight game to start the season, scoring a game-high 25 points in the victory. First-year
Jahmir Primer (Hempstead, N.Y.) had a breakout performance with 14 points and a team-high five assists. Junior
Omar Sarr (Dakar, Senegal) dominated the first half of action, recording a double-double by halftime. He finished with 12 points on 6-7 shooting and a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with a game-high four blocked shots.
Sophomore
Simon McCormick (Whitefield, Maine), first-year
Grant Nadeau (Gorham, Maine) and first-year
Taras Fesiienko (Everett, Wash.) all finished in double figures as well for Bates. McCormick scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, knocking down three of his four three-point attempts in the game. Nadeau was a perfect 3-3 from the field, tallying 11 points. Meanwhile, Fesiienko scored all 10 of his points in the second half as the Bates bench took over.
Jacobe Thomas paced the Huskies (3-4) with 19 points and Cody Hawes added 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Chance Dixon (15 points on 5-9 shooting) and Jason Lombard (11 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals) also finished in double figures for USM.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the contest. They led by as many as 21 points in the first half when Primer hit a three-pointer with 2:59 remaining. But the Huskies went on a 10-0 run to trim the lead to 11 on a layup by Dixon with 16 seconds left. McCormick answered with a jumper at the horn to put Bates up 42-29 at the half.
USM made things interesting in the second half, cutting the Bobcat lead to four on a Thomas layup with 14:58 left in regulation. Once again, McCormick had the answer, drilling a three to put the Bobcats back up by seven. Primer followed with an old fashioned three-point play and Bates led by 10 with 14:16 remaining.
The Huskies did not narrow the deficit to less than eight points the rest of the way.
A Baxter jumper with 7:58 left put Bates up by 10 and the Bobcats maintained the double digit advantage down the stretch. A layup by Baxter with 1:31 left gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of the contest at 90-68.
Bates dominated the glass in the win, out-rebounding USM 48-28. Sarr had as many rebounds at halftime as the Huskies did as a team to that point.
The Bobcats return to action Sunday when they visit the University of New England for a 3pm tip.
