LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior
Brianna Gadaleta scored a career-high 25 points but visiting number 16 nationally ranked Amherst got a triple-double from AnLing Vera and defeated the Bates women's basketball team 60-54 in non-conference action Sunday at Alumni Gym.
Vera finished the game with 16 points on 7-14 shooting, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
Bates (2-1) got off to a fast start, grabbing an 11-4 lead on a pair of free throws from senior
Ariana Dalia (Brick, N.J.) with 4:21 left in the first quarter. The Mammoths (5-0) answered with a 9-0 run, taking a 13-11 edge on a Courtney Resch layup with 2:34 left. Back-to-back layups from Gadaleta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) gave Bates the lead right back at 15-13 before Lauren Pelosi knocked down a three to put Amherst up 16-15 through one quarter.
The Mammoths didn't trail again, keeping the Bobcats at arm's length throughout the afternoon.
Senior
Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) hit a jumper with 3:02 left in the second quarter, cutting the Amherst advantage to 27-25. But Amherst's Reeya Patel scored the final four points of the half, giving the Mammoths a 31-25 lead at the break.
The Mammoths went up by as many as 14 points in the third quarter when Gabrielle Zaffiro hit a three-pointer with 1:47 remaining. Dalia responded with back-to-back layups and junior captain
Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) hit a jumper after Vera split a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to 56-47 through three quarters of action.
The third quarter (25-22 in favor of Amherst) was the highest scoring quarter of the game. The fourth quarter was the lowest, with Bates outscoring Amherst 7-4 over the final 10 minutes. The Bobcats held the Mammoths scoreless for the final 6:26 of the contest after a Patel layup gave Amherst a 60-49 lead.
But Bates only scored five points during that time frame, with a Graff three-pointer making the score 60-54 with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Patel finished with 13 points for Amherst and Resch added 11 points and five blocked shots. Gadaleta recorded a double-double, with 12 rebounds to go along with her 25 points on 10-15 shooting. Graff tallied 13 points on 5-21 shooting for Bates. Dalia finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Shooting percentage was the difference, with the Mammoths shooting 49.1 percent from the floor and Bates struggling from the field at 28.6%.
The Bobcats return to action this Tuesday when they host the University of Southern Maine at 5:30pm.
