LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior
Brianna Gadaleta scored a career-high 14 points and the Bates women's basketball team defeated Thomas College 86-37 Friday night in the Bobcat Classic Tip-Off at Alumni Gym.
The Bobcats (2-0) held the Terriers (0-3) to just 11 points in the first half on their way to victory. Bates tallied 16 steals on the night and Thomas turned the ball over 29 times.
Four different Bates players finished in double figures, with junior captain
Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) tallying 13 points, senior
Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) adding 12, and junior
Jenna Berens (Durham, Conn.) chipping in 11 off the bench for the Bobcats. Graff tallied four steals and Berens blocked three shots. Sophomores
Delaney Nwachukwu (Avon, Conn.) and
Alyson Kennedy (Oklahoma City) both finished with nine points, with Nwachukwu pulling down a team-high seven rebounds and Kennedy knocking down three three-pointers. Senior
Ariana Dalia (Brick, N.J.) dished out a game-high six assists.
Kaylee Ravagli paced the Terriers with a game-high 15 points on 5-13 shooting.
Bates scored the first six points of the game, with Roy making back-to-back layups to start and Gadelata (Chappaqua, N.Y.) adding a layup of her own. The Terriers trimmed the lead to four before Bates scored eight unanswered points to go up by 12 on a Nwachukwu layup with 4:17 left in the first quarter.
A Ravagli three cut the Bobcat edge to 16-8 before Bates scored the final three points of the first quarter. Up 19-8 at the end of one, the Bobcats kept the momentum going in the second quarter, scoring the first 10 points and taking a 29-8 lead on a Graff layup with 5:36 left in the half.
The Bobcats held the Terriers to three points in the second quarter, taking a 42-11 lead into halftime.
Both offenses clicked in the third quarter, with Bates outscoring Thomas 26-16. Gadaleta scored eight of her 14 points in the third quarter, making all four of her shots. Lindsay Given scored five points in three minutes to pace Thomas in the quarter.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth quarter and first-year
Cecilia McQuaid (San Francisco, Calif.) scored her first collegiate points the minute she stepped off the bench, knocking down a three from the right wing.
Bates scored 35 points off turnovers and got 45 points from the bench in the win.
The Bobcats are back in action Sunday afternoon when they host No. 16 nationally ranked Amherst in a non-conference game at 1pm. Thomas takes on New England College Saturday at 3pm to wrap up the Bobcat Classic Tip-Off.
