HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore
Izzy Lussier scored in the second half with an assist from sophomore
Maeve Parmelee on the Bates College women's soccer team's first shot on goal of the game, lifting the Bobcats to an upset 1-0 victory at Trinity College on Sunday afternoon.
Bates (2-4-2, 1-3-0 NESCAC) picked up their first NESCAC win despite an 18-4 Trinity advantage in shots, a 9-2 difference in each half. Senior goalkeeper
Kat Nuckols (Los Angeles, Calif.) held the host Bantams (5-3-1, 1-3-1) scoreless with seven saves in net, her third shutout of the season.
The winning play began with junior
Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) intercepting a Trinity pass in the Bates end, then passing out to junior
Elizabeth Patrick (Ipswich, Mass.) on the left wing. Patrick made a move around a defender and pushed the ball upfield, where Lussier got a foot on the ball to tap it to Parmelee (Pelham, N.Y.). Parmelee returned the ball on the left wing to a streaking Lussier (Suffield, Conn.), who caught up to the ball 15 yards away from the goal and one-timed a beautiful shot that found the gap between Trinity goalie Mariana Cournoyer and the inside post. It was Bates' fourth and final shot of the game, and the only one on net.
A well-timed volley by Trinity's Whitney Hoban off a cross in the 83rd minute had a chance to even the score, but her shot was smothered by Nuckols.
The Bobcats will next play at Middlebury on Saturday at 11am.
