Szwarcewicz scores twice, men's soccer wins 2-1 at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Forward and team captain Alec Szwarcewicz scored a pair of goals and the Bates men's soccer team held off Trinity to earn a 2-1 win in NESCAC action Sunday afternoon.

Szwarcewicz (Newton, Mass.) scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute on a header off a corner kick from junior Justin Phillips (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Phillips delivered a great feed to the left corner of the net where Szwarcewicz elevated above the defense, heading the ball top shelf past the Trinity keeper.

He added his second marker of the contest in the 39th minute. First-year Tife Agunloye (Monroe, Conn.) lofted a pass over the Trinity defense to Szwarcewicz. He stopped the ball with his chest, settled it and spun around, firing a shot into the lower right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Szwarcewicz is now tied with fellow team captain Owen Keleher (Corrales, N.M.) for the team lead in goals so far this year.

Bates led 2-0 at the half.

In the 72nd minute, Jacob Loor got taken down in the box by a Bates defender and drilled the penalty kick into the upper right of the goal to make the score, 2-1. Eight minutes later, Trinity's Dante Merlin got past Bates goalie Bruce David (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with the ball during a scrum in front of the net but his shot shot turned away by Bobcat senior captain James Peter (York, Maine) to keep Trinity (2-7, 0-5 NESCAC) from tying the score.

Bates (6-3, 3-2 NESCAC) finished with a 16-to-11 shooting edge. Trinity goaltender Bernardo Simoes made nine saves and David finished with six for Bates.

The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday at 12pm when they visit Middlebury.
