Volleyball splits a pair of matches at Hall of Fame Tournament

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Bates volleyball team split a pair of matches, defeating Mount Holyoke 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) before falling to host Smith 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-20) Saturday at the Hall of Fame Tournament.

Bates (7-13) returns to action Wednesday when the Bobcats host the University of Southern Maine at 7pm in Alumni Gym. 

Bates 3, Mount Holyoke 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22)

Senior Sydney Phillips tallied a match-high 13 kills and the Bates volleyball team swept Mount Holyoke 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) Saturday at the Hall of Fame Tournament, hosted by Smith College.

Phillips (Plainville, Mass.) recorded a kill percentage of .455 to pace the Bobcats, chipping in three service aces as well. Setter Emma Eide (Ramsey, N.J.) dished out a match-high 24 assists to go along with six kills and a match-high 11 digs. Junior Charlotte Morris (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) added 10 digs and first-year Alyssa Lowther (Wyckoff, N.J.) tallied nine kills, two assists, one block and four digs. 

Bates got off to a fast start in the first set, taking a 4-1 lead when sophomore Cayla Deacon (Ellenwood, Ga.) delivered one of her seven kills on the day on an assist from Eide. 

Mount Holyoke grabbed a 9-8 lead on a kill from McKenna Crosby. But the Bobcats rallied with seven unanswered points to take the lead for good. Mount Holyoke chipped away to get within two at 23-21 before Lowther ended the set with authority, tallying back-to-back kills.

In the second set, Mount Holyoke took a 20-18 lead on a kill from Marianne Simon. Bates answered with a 4-0 run which included a service ace from senior Megan Seabury (Santa Barbara, Calif.). With the set tied at 23, Phillips and Eide each recorded kills to clinch the 2-0 lead for the Bobcats.

In the third set, Mount Holyoke was up 18-16 before the Bobcats pulled off another 4-0 run to grab the lead, highlighted by two Lowther kills. Up 23-22, Bates pulled away for the win thanks to kills from Phillips and Deacon. 

Simon paced Mount Holyoke (3-15) with nine kills in the match. 

Smith 3, Bates 0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-20)

Kinsey Cronin and Sarah Dankovich led all players with eight kills apiece to lead host Smith College past the Bates volleyball team by a final score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-20) Saturday at the Hall of Fame Tournament. 

The Pioneers (21-7) hit .330 with 39 kills and Nathalie Pak dished out 16 assists. Lowther paced the Bobcats with five kills and Phillips added four kills. First-year Kate Hansen (Menlo Park, Calif.) turned in a strong performance with five service aces. Eide dished out nine assists and recorded three service aces of her own.

The Bobcats went up 3-0 in the first set, keyed by a Hansen ace, before the Pioneers scored three unanswered of their own. The teams were neck-and-neck for most of the set but Smith finished strong by scoring seven of the last eight points to secure the win. 

A kill from Lowther and a Hansen service ace put Bates up 2-0 in the second set before Smith scored 13 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 13-3 lead. A Pak service ace clinched the 25-10 victory.

The third set proved to be the closest of the match. A Lowther kill put Bates up 19-16 but the Pioneers scored nine of the next 10 points to rally for the win. Cronin's eighth kill of the night clinched the match for the hosts.
