Three different goal scorers lead field hockey to 3-0 win over Endicott

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior captain Riley Burns dished out an assist and later scored a goal of her own in the Bates field hockey team's 3-0 win over Endicott Wednesday night at Campus Avenue Field.

The Bobcats (6-7) earned nine penalty corners in the contest and turned three of them into goals. Three different Bobcats found the back of the cage in the win.

Bates recorded 16 shots on the evening with 10 shots on goal. The Gulls (8-5) struggled to get shots off, tallying five shots, with one on goal against a swarming Bates defense.

In the fourth minute of action, the Bobcats earned their first penalty corner of the game and immediately took advantage of the opportunity. Senior captain Ashton Bayle (Wayne, Pa.) delivered the insert to Burns (Sterling, Mass.) who ripped a shot toward the right side of the cage. Senior Bridget Thompson (Newtown, Pa.) was waiting and she deflected it home for her third goal of the season.

First-year Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) nearly scored in the eighth minute when she went top shelf against Endicott goaltender Taylor Farrin but Farrin made an impressive save, batting the ball down with her gloves. Farrin finished the contest with six saves.

Cote didn't waste much time getting on the board though, scoring off a penalty corner just two minutes later. Bayle delivered the insert and Cote ripped a shot off an Endicott defender's stick and into the cage for her second goal of the season.

Olivia Lampasona tallied the lone shot on goal for Endicott, a bouncer that junior captain goaltender Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.) kicked away in the 12th minute.

Up 2-0, the Bobcats continued to put the pressure on the Gulls, tallying seven shots in a scoreless second quarter. Then they added an insurance tally in the third quarter on yet another penalty corner.

In the 33rd minute, Bayle delivered the insert and Bates got the ball to sophomore Lauren Salazar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), who centered it to Burns. Burns ripped a shot straight into the lower left side of the cage for her fifth goal of the year. It was Salazar's first assist of the season.

Cote paced Bates with four shots, three on goal. Biddle recorded her third shutout of the season while recording one save.

The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they host No. 11 nationally ranked Williams at noon on Campus Ave. Field.
