LEWISTON, Maine—The Bates field hockey team battled No. 11 Williams to a 2-2 tie through regulation, but it was the Ephs who notched the game-winning goal 3:19 into the overtime period to secure the NESCAC victory on Campus Ave. Field.
Junior Emily Batchelor logged the game winner off an Ephs' corner. Her goal was set up by senior Elizabeth Welch. Batchelor led Williams with a goal and an assist in the victory.
The Ephs improve to 11-3 overall and 6-3 in the NESCAC, while the Bobcats fall to 6-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Williams started the scoring 11:48 into the game. Shortly after a corner, sophomore Molly Hellman was positioned at the right post to tap in a cross from Batchelor from the left side.
Junior
Caroline Grady (Westwood, mass.) evened the score at 1-1 with her first goal of the season in the 26th minute for Bates. On the Bobcats' fourth straight corner, first-year
Anna Cote (Auburn, Maine) blasted a shot on goal that was saved by Ephs' goalie junior Carson Stephenson. The rebound went to senior
Riley Burns (Sterling, Mass.) whose blast towards the goal was sent in by an undefended Grady.
In the 41st minute, a goal by junior Catherine Torres put Williams back on top 2-1. An Ephs' corner was inserted by Batchelor. First-year Linda Bibeau set up the Torres goal to give Williams the lead. The Bobcats answered again, knotting the score at 2-2 in the 49th minute. Senior
Emily Gianunzio (Darien, Conn.) sent a blast into the circle, a defender got a piece of it, but the deflection went right to sophomore
Paige Cote (Auburn, Maine) who redirected it into the back of the goal. It was Cote's sixth goal this season.
With six minutes left in regulation, the Ephs had a scoring chance, when Torres broke through for a one-on-one with Bates keeper junior
Grace Biddle (State College, Pa.). Biddle stepped up and denied the chance with a kick save. She played all 63:19 in goal for the Bobcats and finished with five saves.
Carson Stephenson played the opening 30 minutes in goal for Williams and made six saves. Gates Tenerowicz came in for the final 33:19 and stopped three shots. The Ephs finished with a 17-16 edge in shots and a 12-10 advantage in penalty corners.
The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 26, when they host Colby for a NESCAC contest at 7 p.m.
