Jack Scribner scored five goals and junior
Chris Costello won 13 of 15 face-offs in the Bates men's lacrosse team's 14-4 win over Keene State Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats (1-3) earned their first victory of the season while the Owls (0-3) remained winless. It's the fewest goals allowed by Bates in one game since 2016.
Senior captain Matt Chlastawa (Westfield, Mass.) returned to the lineup on Wednesday and immediately made an impact. Just seconds into the game, he found Costello (Ridgefield, Conn.) on a pass from the near side of the field to the far side. And Costello found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
With 10:42 left in the first quarter, Keene State's Joe Nutting answered with a terrific individual effort, diving around a pair of Bates defenders for the equalizer.
But Scribner (Falmouth, Maine) gave Bates the lead for good with 8:04 left in the opening 15 minutes of action with an unassisted tally. Then he scored again, this time in man-up situation with 1:00 remaining on an assist from sophomore Jack Golden (Northport, N.Y.), putting the Bobcats ahead 3-1.
Leading by two at the end of one, Bates dominated the second quarter, scoring five goals and shutting out the Owls. Four different players scored in the quarter for the Bobcats. Scribner continued his hot start with an unassisted tally at the 10:04 mark and Golden followed less than a minute later with a goal of his own.
Senior captain Curtis Knapton (Westbrook, Maine) scored the first of his two goals on the night and senior Brendan Mullally (Baltimore, Md.) found Scribner for a beautiful behind-the-back goal. Senior Otis Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio), on an assist from sophomore Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.), got in on the act as well.
Up 8-1 at halftime, the Bobcats pushed the lead to 10-1 to start the third quarter, with Scribner connecting with sophomore Walter Braun (Charlotte, Vt.) for the latter's first career goal. And sophomore John Farrell (Bernardsville, N.J.) also scored his first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally with 6:16 on the clock.
With Bates up 10-1, the Owls answered on goals from Nathan Sickles and Jordan Caito, trimming the Bobcat lead to seven with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.
But Knapton scored moments later, tallying his second goal of the night with just 10 seconds left on the clock.
Up 11-3 through three, the Bobcats went up by 11 points thanks to three straight goals to start the fourth quarter. First-year Will Schinabeck ( Shaker Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Jack Lousararian ( Mansfield, Mass.) both notched the second goals of their collegiate careers, with Golden assisting on Lousararian's tally. Golden finished with a pair of assists.
Scribner capped off his big night with a man-up goal with 1:40 remaining in regulation, on an assist from Mullally, putting Bates up 14-3.
The Bobcats won the ground ball battle 38-22 and notched 13 caused turnovers on defense. Senior captain William Holland (Ridgewood, N.J.) caused five turnovers himself.
Bates was a perfect 19-19 in clears while the Owls successfully cleared the ball 19-27 times. The Bobcats out-shot the Owls 45-20 and Bates won 17-22 face-offs, led by Costello's strong effort.
Chase Chamberlin saved 10 of 20 shots in the cage for Keene State, holding his own despite a barrage of Bobcat shot attempts.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host Trinity at 1pm.
