LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine was stifled all game long by the Bates women's lacrosse team in a 20-1 non-conference victory for the host Bobcats Tuesday on Garcelon Field.
USM (1-2) struggled throughout the game to maintain possession against Bates' aggressive midfielders, attackers and defenders. The Huskies cleared the ball on 4-of-20 opportunities in the game and 2-of-14 in the first half, as Bates piled up a 9-0 lead. Senior defender Isabelle Paulus (Bath, Maine) patrolled the middle of the field and caused four USM turnovers and collecting a game-high four ground balls.
Bates (2-3) outshot USM by a 39-7 margin and cleared the ball on 8-of-9 chances.
Senior Liv Sandford (Kennebunk, Maine) scored three goals with two assists and added five draw controls to lead the Bobcats. Sandford's five points matches her career high.
Alex Farley scored USM's lone goal and added two caused turnovers.
Junior Lila Hutchins (Westfield, N.J.) netted her first goal of the season just 32 seconds into the game on the first shot, shoveling the ball past USM goalie Mariah Vaillancourt after Sandford found her with an inside feed.
Sandford made it 2-0 at the 22:58 mark, finishing off a long drive through the Huskies defense with a rip on the run.
Robinson scored soon after the ensuing draw, and Tveter entered the scoring column at the 18:38 mark. Sandford again finished off a long run with her second goal of the game with 16:18 to go, and Bates led 5-0 a quarter of the way through the game.
First-year Eva Lee (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate goal with 10:53 to go and the Huskies were held scoreless for the rest of the half while the Bobcats built a 9-0 lead, as Bates continued to limit the Huskies to their defensive half of the field. Sophomore Kate Loughlin (Portsmouth, N.H.), Sandford and sophomore Dana Swartz (North Andover, Mass.) scored before intermission.
Bates threatened to initiate a running clock before halftime when DiPinto was awarded an 8-meter shot with seven seconds remaining. But USM goalie Mariah Vaillancourt made the save.
DiPinto did give Bates the 10-goal lead that started the running clock when she scored on an assist from Sandford 2:45 into the second half for a 10-0 lead.
Scola scored her first collegiate goal at the 24:38 mark of the half, and junior Summer Dias (Newton, Mass.) hit senior Avery MacMullen (New Haven, Conn.) on the run for a 12-0 Bates lead.
With 16:57 remaining in the game, Farley was awarded an 8-meter shot after a Bates yellow card, and the junior midfielder buried the shot past Bates first-year goalie Cammie Lavoie (Epping, N.H.) to make it 12-1.
Bates first-years Stella Stone (Providence, R.I.) and Hadley Nolan (Bethesda, Md.) recorded their first career points with 14:53 to go in the game, with Nolan feeding Stone to make it 13-1. Stone scored again at the 12:17 mark on a free-position shot and made it a hat trick with 5:26 remaining, batting in a loose ball in front of the goal.
Lee assisted on Bates' next two goals, setting up senior defender Caroline Kerrigan (Falls Church, Va.) and Scola for a 16-1 lead.
Loughlin, Stone, and DiPinto all added to the Bobcat lead in the closing minutes, and first-year Zoe Knauss (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored on a free-position shot for her first collegiate goal to cap the scoring.
