Men's basketball flies past Connecticut College 99-67

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bates men's basketball team scored the first 10 points of the game and flew past Connecticut College for a 99-67 NESCAC victory Friday night at the Charles B. Luce Field House.

Bates (11-9, 3-4 NESCAC) shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the field, including 51.9% from three-point territory, and matched their season low with six turnovers en route to their most points of the year.

Senior Jeff Spellman (Boston, Mass.) led Bates' highly efficient night with 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-4 from three, all in 22 minutes of action. Senior Nick Gilpin (Hampden, Maine) added 11 points and four assists in 17 minutes.

Coming off the bench, first-year Jacob Iwowo (London, England) posted a career-high 11 points and four assists along with a team-high five rebounds, while sophomore Joe Collins (Cutchogue, N.Y.) shot 3-3 on 3-pointers for nine points.

The Bobcats stormed out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 2:37 by shooting 4-of-5 from the floor, including a perfect 2-of-2 from long range, to force the hosts to burn a 30-second timeout. Spellman scored four points and set up senior Kody Greenhalgh (West Warwick, R.I.) for a trey to cap the early surge.

Austin Nwafor dunked for the Camels' first field goal at 14:21 to make it 14-4, but the Bobcats responded with another 10 unanswered points by continuing to convert from beyond the arc to balloon their advantage to 20 before the midway point of the half. The Bobcats extended their lead to as many as 24 in the frame and led by a 53-31 score at recess.

The Bobcats opened the scoring in the second half when Gilpin drained a three and continued to remain in control. The senior stretched the lead to 29 by finishing an old-fashioned 3-point play at the line to make it 67-38 with 16:56 still remaining, and the Camels were unable to recover. Bates maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way en route to coming away with the 32-point victory.

Daniel Draffan paced Connecticut College (4-17, NESCAC 0-7) in the losing effort, scoring 21 points and grabbing three boards.

Bates stays on the road to play at Trinity (14-7, 4-3) Saturday at 3pm.
