WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. -- Williams College outscored the Bates men's basketball team 11-3 over the final 5:29, en route to a 63-51 NESCAC victory Friday night in Chandler Gym.
The loss dropped Bates (11-12, 3-6 NESCAC) into a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference with Bowdoin and Hamilton, with one game remaining in the regular season. Bates plays at Middlebury (20-3, 6-3) Saturday at 3pm. Williams (12-11, 5-4) is alone in sixth place in the NESCAC.
The Ephs took a 24-22 lead into halftime, with Bates shooting 8-28 (29%) from the field, and Williams going 10-26 (39%). From three-point range, the Bobcats went 3-16 (19%), and the Ephs sunk 3-11 (27%).
Henry Feinberg nailed his third trey of the night from the top of the arc to open the second half. But Bates first-year Stephon Baxter (Worcester, Mass.) scored nine of the first 11 Bobcat points of the second period, and a 37-30 lead for the Ephs shrank to 37-35 with 14:26 to go.
With the Ephs holding a four-point lead, Mickey Babek knocked down a three-pointer, then dished to Karpowicz in the paint for an easy layup. The make put Williams up 48-39 with 8:55 remaining.
Bates first-year Jacob Iwowo (London, England), senior Tom Coyne (Falmouth, Maine), and senior Jeff Spellman (Boston, Mass.) all hit treys for Bates over a span of 3:03 to keep the game tight.
But the Ephs did not let Bates come closer than four points. Jovan Jones, Karpowicz, and Feinberg combined for 14 of the final 17 Eph points, and Williams forced six turnovers over the last five minutes.
Baxter and Spellman scored 13 and 12 points for Bates, respectively, while Coyne added eight from off the bench. The Bobcats went 19-61 (31%) from the field.
First-year Omar Sarr (Dakar, Senegal) had a forceful night with 17 rebounds and five blocks to go with four points.
Karpowicz and Feinberg had 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the Ephs shot 26-58 (45%) from the floor. Cole Prowitt-Smith added 10 off the bench.
