BALTIMORE, Md. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis fell 7-2 at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, winning points at No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles against the No. 21 Blue Jays.

Bates (3-5) returns to action on Saturday at 1pm at MIT.

Johns Hopkins (4-2) took two out of three matches in doubles for a 2-1 lead. Winning the point for Bates were seniors Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Ben Eckardt (Montgomery, N.J.), by an 8-6 score over Colin Muraika and Scott Thygesen. Meanwhile Austin Gu and Joe Cartledge defeated Bates senior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Vishnu Joshi and Vik Vasan defeated Bates senior Dylan Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and junior Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) 8-2 at third doubles.

The Blue Jays defeated the Bobcats in straight sets to earn all five of their singles points. But Kauppila defeated Thygesen in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, for his fourth straight victory at No. 2 singles. Kauppila is 6-2 on the year in singles play.
