Women's basketball defends No. 4 Bowdoin well in non-conference loss at home

LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 4 nationally ranked Bowdoin outscored the Bates women's basketball team in each quarter in a 59-42 non-conference victory Thursday night, as senior Maddie Hasson led the Polar Bears with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Bowdoin (7-0) and Bates (3-4) will meet again Feb. 1 at Bowdoin in the game that will count in New England Small College Athletic Conference standings.

Meghan Graff scored 19 points to lead the Bobcats, who the night before won an overtime thriller against Colby. No other Bobcat scored more than six points. Taylor McVeigh grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Jenna Berens posted five points, five rebounds and two blocks from off the bench.

Samantha Roy scored 17 points and Dorian Cohen added 12 points off the bench for Bowdoin, which missed all 10 of its three-point attempts after averaging 9.7 3-pointers per game as a team. Bowdoin was held to a season-low field goal percentage of .361 for the game.

Bowdoin outscored Bates at the free-throw line, making 15-21 (.714) to Bates' 6-11 (.545), and Bowdoin outrebounded Bates 49-33 including 19 offensive boards, while holding the Bobcats to a .286 field-goal percentage (16-56).

The first quarter was a defensive battle initially and stood at 6-4 in Bates' favor with 3:46 left after a layup by Taylor McVeigh. Polar Bears made their last five shots in the quarter, offsetting a 3-pointer by Graff and a jumper by Berens to take a 16-11 lead after 10 minutes. Cohen made all three of her shots in the final 2:04 of the period, and Hasson finished the quarter with eight points.

Julia Middlebrook's three less than two minutes into the second quarter closed the gap to 18-17, but Hasson answered with six straight points, four of them from the line. A pair of free throws by Samantha Roy with 45 seconds to go gave Bowdoin a 28-19 lead, and the Polar Bears took a 28-21 lead into halftime despite making 2-10 shots from the field in the second quarter.

Bowdoin extended the lead by seven points in the third quarter, as Samantha Roy scored eight points, including six in a row during a back-forth flurry midway through the period. Graff made a layup with 1:03 to go to narrow the gap to 41-31. Hasson then made two free throws, stole the ball and fed Ali Meade for a layup to give Bowdoin a 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Graff made a layup, assisted a three by Middlebrook and hit a pair of free throws in the first 1:19 of the fourth quarter as Bates closed the gap to 49-38, but the Bobcats got no closer than that, with Bowdoin outscoring the hosts 13-4 over the final eight minutes of the game.

Both teams return to non-conference action Saturday at 2pm; Bates will host Saint Joseph's, while Bowdoin will host Colby.
