HARTFORD, Conn. -- Max Steinhorn singled in William Murphy in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Amherst College Mammoths rallied from a run down to defeat the Bates baseball team by a score of 3-2 Friday night on the campus of Trinity College in the opener of the four-team double elimination NESCAC tournament.
The Bobcats (14-18) have a quick turnaround as they take on the Wesleyan Cardinals Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. The winner of that game will face the loser of Tufts-Amherst later in the day. Tufts defeated Wesleyan on Friday 16-3.
With the score even at one, Bates took the lead in the top of the 12th. With two outs, sophomore Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) singled to right field off Amherst reliever Zach Horwitz. The Mammoths (22-12) brought in their closer Mike Dow and Dow walked back-to-back hitters to load the bases. Sophomore Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.) got hit by a pitch to force in a run, putting Bates up 2-1. Dow hurt himself on the pitch so after a lengthy delay the Mammoths brought in Stephen Burke. Burke (2-0) got the next batter to pop out to end the inning.
Senior captain Jake Shapiro (Sandy, Utah) was outstanding out of the bullpen for Bates. He tossed three and a third innings of shutout ball leading up to the bottom of the 12th. But Sam Ellinwood singled to lead off the frame. Then the Mammoths attempted to bunt Ellinwood over. Murphy took a called strike before bunting a pitch foul. With two strikes, despite the risk of another foul bunt being the end of Murphy's at bat, the Mammoths tried the sacrifice again. This time it worked, better than they could have imagined. Shapiro (1-1) slipped as he fielded the ball and his throw to first sailed into right field, giving Amherst runners at second and third with nobody out.
A wild pitch scored Ellinwood, tying the game at two. Then Shapiro walked Kai Terada-Herzer and intentionally walked Severino Simeone to load the bases. That's when Steinhorn delivered the game-winning hit.
Sophomore Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) pitched seven plus innings of one-run ball to start the game for Bates. He allowed just four hits, walking four and striking out five. Sam Schneider countered with seven and two thirds innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out 10.
Bates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs, senior Connor DiVincenzo (Westwood, Mass.) smacked a double that nearly left the ballpark. Then sophomore Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) singled him home for the first run of the game.
The Mammoths evened things up in the bottom of the sixth. Harry Roberson walked to start the inning. Amherst bunted him to second and with two away Joseph Palmo singled in the tying run.
Collins walked Roberson again to start the eighth but junior reliever Alex Simon (Windsor, Conn.) entered the game and got a pair of outs, one via a sacrifice bunt and the other via a strikeout before handing the ball to Shapiro. Roberson decided to try to steal third and sophomore catcher Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) threw him out to end the inning.
The teams combined for just one baserunner in the ninth through 11th innings before the wild 12th inning eventually ended the game.
Amherst narrowly outhit Bates 7-6 on the evening. Ellinwood recorded three hits and Steinhorn notched two including the game-winner. DiVincenzo and junior Justin White (Whitesboro, N.Y.) recorded doubles for Bates.
