WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore
Nolan Collins allowed three hits over seven innings to earn his first collegiate win and senior captain
Jake Shapiro picked up the save for the Bates baseball team in a 4-1 win over Colby College in the second game of a NESCAC baseball doubleheader sweep of the Mules
on Saturday.
The Bobcats (7-9 overall, 3-2 NESCAC East) also took an 11-0 shutout win for senior captain
Connor Russell (Cumberland, Maine) in the opening game.
The two teams will meet again in a single game at Bates
on Sunday at
noon. The Bobcats have won seven straight against Colby (2-11 overall, 0-2 NESCAC East) going back to 2016.
Game One: Bates 11, Colby 0
Russell (1-1) went all seven innings, struck out three, and walked one in the 11-0 win for Bates.
Junior
Dan Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) had three hits, including a home run in the sixth inning, and scored three times for the Bobcats. Sophomore
Kyle Carter (Plantation, Fla.) added two hits, two runs batted in, and scored one run. Junior
Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) also had two hits, while sophomore
Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) had a two-run double in the third inning. Sophomore
Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.) scored twice, drove in a run, had one hit, and stole a base for the Bobcats.
Keenan Iuliano was 1-for-2 and walked for the Mules. The Mules hurt their own cause with two errors.
Avila and Trulli opened the fifth inning with singles and later scored on an error. Trulli hit his solo home run in the sixth inning and Bates added one more in the top of the seventh inning.
Game Two: Bates 4, Colby 1
Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) struck out three and gave up three singles in seven innings of the 4-1 victory. Shapiro (Sandy, Utah) struck out four in the final two innings.
Colby took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ben Coleman led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Andrew Russell. After a fielder's choice put runners on first and third, Andrew Sterup walked to load the bases. Iuliano got on by error and brought in Coleman with the run.
Senior
Connor DiVincenzo (Westwood, Mass.) singled with two outs in the fifth inning to get the Bobcats started. After a single by Avila, the runners both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Trulli brought in both runners with a triple.
Arend had a double in the sixth inning and later scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) walked with one out and came into score when DiVincenzo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final run.
