LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Andrew Berghuis won an epic three-set match and the No. 19 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team defeated Hamilton 9-0 Saturday in the Bobcats' NESCAC opener at Merrill Gymnasium.
Berghuis (Toronto, Ontario) defeated Hamilton's Jafar Sharipov at No. 6 singles by a count of 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in the final match of the day.
The Bobcats (3-2, 1-0 NESCAC) took care of business in doubles to get the day off on the right foot.
Senior captain Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles over Hamilton's Rob Dotterer and Sam Farber. Meanwhile junior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) cruised to an 8-1 win over Matt May and Eyad Nagori at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, junior Dylan Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) teamed up with sophomore Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) to earn a hard-fought 8-6 win over Hamilton's Tim Derby and Max Zimmerman.
Bates kept the momentum going in singles play, with Quijano winning 6-4, 6-0 over Farber at No. 1 singles and Leiner turning in a similar performance with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Dotterer at No. 2 singles.
Yadav won in straight sets as well, defeating Zimmerman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Sophomores Jacob Eisenberg (Armonk, N.Y.) and Nick Glover (Austin, Texas) took care of business at No. 4 and 5 singles respectively. Eisenberg won 6-2, 6-2 over Derby and Glover turned in the most dominant performance of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over May.
The Bobcats visit No. 3 Middlebury Sunday for a 10:00 a.m. match.
