THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team took its second 9-0 victory of the week, sweeping Cal Lutheran Saturday to finish its Southern California trip with a 2-1 record.
Bates dropped only one set on the day, including a sweep of doubles play. Senior Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and sophomore Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) defeated Yahn Gawrit and Lucas Tilly 8-6 at No. 1 doubles; senior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) beat Dara Kashani and Andrew Tufenkian 8-2 at No. 2; and sophomore Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and junior Duane Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) downed Michael Sulahian and Joshua Legardy 8-2 at No. 3.
At No. 1 singles, Rosen deefated Gawrit 6-4, 6-0, while at No. 2, Quijano outlasted Tilly 4-6, 6-2, 13-11 in the most competitive match of the day.
Yadav won 6-0, 6-0 over Sebastian Ariza at No. 5 singles, his second sweep of the week. First-year Alex Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Florent Auteil. Kauppila won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and sophomore Jacob Eisenberg won 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles.
Bates plays at Brandeis next Saturday, March 3 at 1pm.
