HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior
Maddie Inlow went a combined 3-6 at the plate with a run batted in but the Bates softball team dropped a pair of games to Trinity on Saturday.
The Bobcats (5-6, 0-3 NESCAC) fell 10-2 in game one and the Bantams (12-8, 4-1 NESCAC) clipped Bates in game two by a count of 5-1.
Bates was the "home" team for both games because the series was relocated to Hartford from Lewiston due to inclement weather.Â
Game One: Trinity 10, Bates 2
The Bobcats got on the board first but the Bantams scored eight unanswered runs, including five in the fifth, to run away with a 10-2 win over Bates in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
First-year Julia Treadwell (Falmouth, Maine) got the offense going in the bottom of the second with a single to start the frame. First-year India Woolmington (New York, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.)Â doubled her home to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
The Bantams took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.Â
With a runner at third and two away, Nicole Towner tripled in a run. Towner later came into score on a Bates error, putting the Bantams up by one.
Bates answered in the bottom half of the frame.Â
Sophomore Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) led off with a single. The Bobcats bunted her to second and then Russo stole third. Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) singled in Russo to tie the game at two.Â
But Katharine Haghdan smacked a two-run home run to give the Bantams the lead for good in the fourth.Â
They added to their lead with five runs in the fifth inning. Michelle Treglia reached on an infield single to start the frame. Towner tallied her second triple of the day and Courtney Erickson singled her home to extend the Bantam advantage to 6-2.
Two outs later, Lindsay Pressman singled and Haghdan doubled in two runs. A Nikki Andersen moved Haghdan to third and she came into score on an infield single off the bat of Erica Merullo.
When the dust cleared, Trinity led 9-2 through five innings.
Natalie Bruno homered in the top of the sixth to put the Bantams up by eight. The Bobcats failed to score in the bottom half of the frame, ending the game in six innings due to softball's eight-run rule.
Rachael Smith (5-3) pitched a complete game to get the win for Trinity. She tossed six innings, scattering seven hits, allowing only two runs, walking two and striking out two along the way.
Sophomore Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) pitched the entire game for Bates, taking the loss to move her record to 2-3 on the season.
Game Two: Trinity 5, Bates 1
The Bantams scored twice in the first to take the lead for good in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.Â
Trinity starter Lindsay Golia (6-4)Â held Bates to two hits throughout the contest and the Bobcats didn't get on the board until the seventh inning.
In the top of the first, Merullo singled leading off the game. Two outs later, Erickson tripled her home. Bruno doubled in Erickson and Trinity led 2-0.
First-year Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) settled down after that in the circle. She also was the first Bobcat to reach base, drawing a one-out walk in the bottom of the third.
With two away, Russo doubled Pelletier to third but Bates left both runners stranded.
Bruno added to the Trinity lead with her second homer of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to make it 4-0 in favor of the Bantams.Â
Inlow recorded the Bobcats' second and final hit in the bottom of the sixth when she singled with two away.
After Trinity added another run in the top of the seventh, Bates got on the board in the bottom half of the frame.
With one away, Woolmington drew a walk. Crowley reached on Trinity error and Woolmington advanced to third on the play. Then Pelletier picked up a run batted in with a ground out to first, scoring Woolmington from third in the process.
Golia finished off the game by getting another ground out, wrapping up a performance that saw her go the full seven innings, giving up one run (unearned) on two hits, walking two and striking out two.
Pelletier (3-3) took the loss, going the full seven innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, walking four and striking out six.
The softball team is back in action Sunday when they visit Tufts for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.Â
