LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 18 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team fell 8-1 to No. 5 Wesleyan University on Saturday at the Wallach Tennis Center, in the Bobcats' regular-season finale.

The visiting Cardinals (12-2, 7-1 NESCAC) most recently defeated No. 1 Middlebury by a 5-4 score. They will play at Bowdoin on Sunday.

Bates' (6-10, 5-4 NESCAC) hopes for a bid in the six-team NESCAC Men's Tennis Championship tournament dimmed only slightly with the loss, as Tufts' loss at Bowdoin left the Bobcats as one of six teams with five or more conference victories.

Bates junior Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) saw his 11-match winning streak at No. 1 singles come to an end, as Steven Chen got past his fellow All-American 6-3, 7-5.

The Bobcats picked up their lone point at No. 3 doubles, where sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) defeated Chen and Cameron Daniels 9-7. Rosen and senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) fell in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles to Michael Liu and Jake Roberts, 9-8 (4), while at second doubles, junior Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) fell 8-3 to Tiago Eusebio and Maxwell Smith.

First-year Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) faced off with Wesleyan's Princeton Carter in the day's most competitive singles match, at No. 6, where Carter prevailed 7-5, 7-6 (5). Elsewhere, Liu defeated Ellis 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; Eusebio downed Quijano 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3; Joachim Samson defeated Schwartz 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4; and Daniels defeated Ordway 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
