LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year players Julia Treadwell and India Woolmington combined for five hits, three doubles and three RBIs as the Bates softball team won Game 1 of its doubleheader against Colby College 5-2 on Saturday at Lafayette Street Field. The visiting Mules came back in the second game for a 6-3 victory to split the twinbill.
The teams will wrap up their three-game NESCAC East Division series Sunday at noon at Colby.
It was the fourth doubleheader this week that the host Bobcats (9-11, 1-5 NESCAC East) have split. Colby (8-16, 1-7 NESCAC East) stopped a four-game losing streak with the Game 2 victory.
Game 1 Recap
Bates scored two runs in the first inning and added runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings in support of first-year pitcher Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine), who notched her first NESCAC victory in a complete-game effort. Pelletier (5-6) scattered four hits and five walks in allowing two runs and striking out seven Mules.
Julia Saul (3-8) went six innings for Colby, allowing all five runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
First-year Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) drew walks in the first inning and advanced to second and third on senior Tori Fitzgerald's (Holliston, Mass.) groundout. Treadwell then doubled against the center-field fence to score both Bobcats for a 2-0 lead.
Woolmington made it 3-0 in the second, leading off with a double to left center, moving to second on sophomore Sam Fellers' (Mendham, N.J.) sacrifice bunt and scoring on a wild pitch.
Colby got a run back in the third, as Kate McLaughlin led off with a single, stole second, reached third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
Treadwell and Woolmington struck again in the fourth, as Treadwell laced her second double of the game to left field. She reached third on a wild pitch before scoring on Woolmington's single to left.
Bates added an insurance run in the fifth, as sophomore Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) led off with a single, stole second and third bases and scored on Panepinto's groundout.
Colby scored a second run in the top of the seventh. Vanessa Warshaw hit a one-out pinch double to left center. Emily Dougherty returned to the game to run for Warshaw, and she scored from third on a delayed double-steal, after Carly Swartz (walk) was thrown out at second to start the play.
Woolmington batted 3-3 in the game while Treadwell was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, combining for five of Bates' six hits.
Game 2 Recap
Colby scored twice in the second inning, three times in the fifth, and led 6-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, where Bates rallied for three runs and had the tying run at the plate with one out. Colby starting pitcher Wiley Holton (5-6) ended the threat by striking out Panepinto and inducing a game-ending lineout by Inlow.
Holton allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Fellers (4-5) gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Ella Hommeyer doubled to left to lead off the second for Colby. Holton followed with a bunt that shot through the left side for an RBI single to put the Mules on the board. Mason's single pushed Holton to third base, and Paige Hartnett then bunted Holton home.
The score remained 2-0 until Colby plated three runs in the fifth, first loading the bases with no outs on a double by Robin Spofford and walks issued to Skylar Labbe and Hommeyer. Spofford then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning. Grace Farnkoff reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt that scored Labbe, and Hommeyer then came home when Kathleen Mason bunted and reached base safely on a throwing error.
Colby added a sixth run in the sixth. Spofford reached on a one-out fielder's choice, took second base on a wild pitch and scored on Labbe's single to right center.
Bates came up with four of its seven hits in the game during its seventh-inning rally. Treadwell led off with a single, sophomore Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.) walked, and Woolmington followed with a double to right center, scoring Treadwell and giving Bates runners at second and third with no outs. Fellers then drove Crowley home with a single to right. Holton struck out Pelletier for the first out of the inning, bringing up the top of the order in Russo, who singled up the middle to score Woolmington. But Holton got out of the jam with back-to-back outs and the Mules evened the series.
Spofford and Hommeyer had two hits apiece in Colby's seven-hit attack.
