NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The No. 28 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team had no trouble sweeping Connecticut College 9-0 on Saturday, picking up its fourth NESCAC victory of the season.
Bates (5-9, 4-3 NESCAC) juggled its lineup for the match, creating opportunities for player such as first-years Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.), Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Nicholas Glover (Austin, Texas), all of whom won convincingly at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Junior Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) moved up a spot in the singles lineup to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Will Cannon at No. 3 singles.
Meanwhile the mainstays at the top of the Bobcats' singles lineup were both victorious as well. Junior Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) won his 10th consecutive singles match, rolling past Charlie Williams 6-0, 6-0. Senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Conn.) defeated Will Cannon at No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-3.
Bates won all three doubles matches by 8-4 scores. Senior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and Schwartz teamed up to defeat Cannon and Daniel Maffa at No. 1 doubles; Rosen teamed with Kauppila to defeat Ben Sachs and Williams at second doubles; and sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) defeated Johnny Cissel and Patrick Farrell at third doubles.
The host Camels fell to 4-9 overall, 0-6 in league play.
After four consecutive road matches, Bates returns home for its final two matches of the regular season. The Bobcats host Bowdoin on Wednesday at 4pm, followed by Wesleyan on Saturday at 2pm.
