MEDFORD, Mass. -- Junior Ben Rosen won his ninth consecutive match at No. 1 singles and teamed up with senior Chris Ellis to win at No. 1 doubles, but the host and No. 20 nationally ranked Tufts defeated the No. 28 Bobcats 6-3 on Thursday in a NESCAC match.

Bates (4-9, 3-3 NESCAC) lost its second straight while Tufts (6-6, 3-4 NESCAC) snapped a three-match skid.

Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) rang up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rohan Gupte to take the first singles point from the Jumbos. Bates also got a win at No. 6 singles, as first-year Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) won 6-1, 6-3 over Kevin Kelly.

Elsewhere in singles play, Zain Ali defeated Ellis 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; Dan Coran outlasted sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) at No. 3; Nathan Niemiec defeated junior Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Ethan Chen topped seniro Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) 7-5, 7-5 at No. 5.

Rosen and Ellis defeated Gupte and Ali in a tiebreaker 9-8 (5) at first doubles for Bates, but Ordway and Schwartz fell 8-5 to Niemiec and Ross Kamin, while Quijano and junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) fell 8-5 at No. 2 to Coran and Benjamin Battle.

Bates will play at Connecticut College in its fifth straight NESCAC match on Saturday at 10am.
