Men's tennis defeats No. 32 Brandeis 7-2 at home

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 40 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team downed No. 32 Brandeis 7-2 on Saturday in Merrill Gymnasium, picking up their first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season.

The Judges (4-6) scored the first point of the afternoon with Tyler Ng and David Aizenberg's 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Bates senior Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) and junior Adam Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.). But the Bobcats (2-7) took a 2-1 lead going into singles play, with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles from junior Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) over Ryan Bunis and Michael Arguello, along with sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and first-year Jacob Kauppila's (Chesterfield, Mo.) 8-6 win at third doubles over Brian Granoff and Jackson Kogan.

Rosen quickly posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Bunis at No. 1 singles for a 3-1 lead, and Schwartz made it 4-1 when he finished a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Ng at No. 4 singles. Bates clinched the win when Ellis earned the Bobcats' fifth point with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Brian Granoff at No. 2 singles. 

Brandeis then received a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win from Arguello over Quijano at third singles, but Ordway put the finishing touches on a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Mitchell Ostrovsky at No. 5 singles for the Bobcats' sixth point.

At No. 6 singles, Kauppila outlasted Aizenberg in the final contest of the night, winning 7-5, 7-6 (1).

Bates plays its third NESCAC match of the season on Wednesday, hosting Colby at 4pm.
