CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 26 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team won a doubles match and a pair of singles matches in a 6-3 road loss to No. 22 MIT Saturday afternoon.
Bates (0-3) got the match off on the right foot against the Engineers (4-0) with a win at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) teamed up to defeat Sean Ko and Victor Cheng in impressive fashion, tallying an 8-0 victory. But the Bobcats did not have as much success at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles, dropping both matches to trail 2-1 heading into singles play.
Bates lost at No. 4, No. 3 and No. 1 singles in quick succession, clinching the match for the Engineers.
But the Bobcats didn't back down, as senior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) prevailed at No. 2 singles by a count of 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 (tiebreaker) over Alex Cauneac.
Although the Bobcats dropped a match at No. 6 singles, they ended the day on a high note with first-year Vidyut Yadav (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) beating Albert Go 6-0, 5-7, 10-8 (tiebreaker) to earn Yadav the first singles victory of his collegiate career.
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, March 11 when they visit last year's national runner-up and No. 3 nationally ranked Middlebury for a 9:00 a.m. match.
