LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's soccer team scored two goals in under a minute late in the second half to secure a 2-2 draw against Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Field.
In the 84th minute, sophomore Olivia Amdur (Chicago, Ill.) blasted a shot high into the net off a great pass from junior Hannah Behringer (Old Lyme, Conn.) for her fourth goal of the season, cutting the Wesleyan lead to one.
Then, in the 85th minute, junior Ainsley Jamieson (Scarborough, Maine) delivered a great set piece for Behringer to knock in, tying the match at two.
In the first overtime, Bates goalkeeper, Sarah McCarthy '18 (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) shut down two attempts by Wesleyan in back-to-back shots to keep the score tied at two. McCarthy made five saves in the match and neither team scored in the two overtime periods.
Bates (2-4-1, 0-3-1) out-shot the Cardinals (2-2-2, 0-1-2) 15-13 on the afternoon but early on it looked like Wesleyan would dominate the match.
Just 11 seconds in, Sarah Sylla's shot missed just wide left of the goal, showing the Cardinals would be a force to be reckoned with right off the bat.
In the seventh minute, Ella Sinfield's shot hit the crossbar and the follow-up attempt from Nicole Brodkowitz missed high, keeping the match scoreless.
But in the 12th minute of action, the Bobcats committed a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for the Cardinals. Brodkowitz took advantage and blasted the ball into the left side of the net for her second goal of the season, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats did get seven shots off in the first half, matching the Cardinals, but none found the back of the net.
Neither team scored again until 10 minutes into the second half, when Olivia Gorman's slow roller was tapped in by Sylla to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
But the Bobcats refused to go down without a fight.
The Bobcats have now tied or beat Wesleyan each of the last four years. Bates will host No. 1 nationally ranked Williams Sunday at noon at Russell Street Field.
