BRUNSWICK, Maine -- After leading the game 1-0 for 60 minutes of action, Bowdoin added two scores in the final 20 minutes to defeat the Bates women's soccer team 3-0 Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.
Bates (2-2, 0-2 NESCAC) will look to gain its first conference win this Saturday at noon at Tufts University.
Sophia Lemmer scored on Morgen Gallagher's assist in the 11th minute to stake the host Polar Bears (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) to an early lead. Lemmer forced junior goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) out of net to challenge a long feed into the box from Morgen Gallagher. With McCarthy committed to the play, Lemmer settled the ball on the right post and netted a shot to the opposite side.
Holding onto the one goal lead through the remainder of the opening half, Bowdoin looked to double its tally in the opening 10 minutes of the second. Following a corner kick, the Polar Bears forced a defensive scramble on the left post that ended with the ball in McCarthy's hands.
The Bobcat defense came up with two more big saves 20 minutes into the half as Julia Bottone took a shot from close range that McCarthy denied with a left hand save, only to see Eliza Nitzen collect the rebound. Nitzen's one-timer was blocked on the goal line by sophomore defender Sarah Gutch (Gaithersburg, Md.).
The rivals battled back and forth for the remainder of the first half and more than half of the second period, until Evan Fencik doubled Bowdoin's lead to 2-0 with an assist from Lauren McLaughlin. Anna Mellman put the game out of reach with her unassisted tally in the 86th minute.
McCarthy made nine saves in the loss. Sophomore forward Olivia Amdur (Chicago, Ill.) attempted four shots and put two on goal, both team highs, as Bowdoin keeper Rachel Stout preserved her second shutout with three saves.
Bowdoin held an 18-8 edge in shots, with the Bobcats earning a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
