HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 9 nationally ranked Bates women's lacrosse team fell to No. 7 nationally ranked and top-seeded Trinity by a score of 14-3 Saturday in the NESCAC Championships semifinals.
The Bobcats (12-5) will now await their fate in regards to the NCAA Championships. The field will be announced Sunday night.
The Bantams (15-2) never trailed as Clare Lyne scored back-to-back goals to start the game. She tallied a free position goal with 20:07 to go in the first half and scored again with 16:59 remaining with an assist from Martha Griffin.
Down 2-0, Bates got to within one with 13:35 left in the first half when senior Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal.
But the Bantams went on a quick 3-0 run to extend their lead to 5-1. With 6:39 remaining in the half, Brinkman scored again, this time on an assist from sophomore Camille Belletete (Jaffrey, N.H).
Down 5-2, Bates surrendered another goal with 5:32 left and Trinity tallied two more goals in the final two minutes to enter the half up 8-2.
The Bobcats struggled on offense in the second half, tallying only four shots. Meanwhile Trinity scored six unanswered goals before Belletete tallied a goal with 2:14 to go in the game.
Overall, Trinity took 24 shots in the game while Bates tallied only 15. Draw controls moved to be the difference with the Bantams winning 15 out of 19 draw controls on the afternoon.
Lyne finished with a game-high four goals for Trinity while Georgia Mergner dished out a game-high four assists.
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) made five saves for Bates while Zoe Ferguson and Emily Mooney combined to make six saves for the Bantams.
