Ellis wins at second singles as No. 22 men's tennis falls to No. 8 Amherst

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team fell 8-1 to No. 8 Amherst in a NESCAC match on Saturday at the Wallach Tennis Center, scoring its lone point with junior Chris Ellis's win at No. 2 singles.

Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) battled with Michael Solimano at second singles, taking the third-set tiebreaker 11-9 after Solimano had evened the match with a tiebreaker win in the second set.

Bates sophomore Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) took Anton Zykov to three sets at No. 1 singles in a narrow loss.

Amherst (12-4, 3-1 NESCAC) assumed a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, with Zykov and Andrew Yaraghi scoring a 9-8 (6) win over Bates juniors Fergus Scott (Wellington, New Zealand) and Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine). Ellis and Rosen fell 8-5 to Aaron Revzin and Solimano at first doubles. At No. 3, Ben Fife and Zach Bessette defeated Bates junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) 8-1.

At No. 6 singles, Quijano was swept in the first set by Justin Sun but took him to a tiebreaker in the second set.

Bates (5-6, 1-2 NESCAC) returns to action on Sunday, April 17 at home against Connecticut College.
