LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Ben Rosen remained hot with a victory at No. 1 singles, but the No. 24 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team fell 8-1 to No. 9 Williams on Sunday at the Wallach Tennis Center.
Williams (11-3, 4-2 NESCAC) swept the three doubles matches, including an 8-0 win at No. 2. Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and junior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) lost 8-5 to Alexander Schidlovsky and Brian Grodecki at first doubles, while junior Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) lost 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to Ephs duo Brian Astrachan and Sachin Raghavan.
Rosen won his third straight match at No. 1 singles against Raventos, coming back from a tiebreaker loss in the first set to win 6-3 in the second set and 10-6 in a super tiebreaker.
At No. 2 singles, Ellis tied Grodecki with a 6-4 win in the second set, before the Ephs won the point with a 10-8 win in the super tiebreaker.
Bates (6-9, 2-5 NESCAC) lost at third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles in two sets, with Quijano taking Raghavan to a 7-5 decision in the second set of his loss at fourth singles.
The Ephs will return to Lewiston for the NESCAC Tennis Championships, to be played at Wallach May 6-8. The Bobcats have missed qualifying for the tournament's six-team field, but will wrap up the regular season with a match Sunday at No. 2 Bowdoin, starting at 4pm.
