GREENE, Maine -- The No. 1 nationally ranked Bates women's rowing team had no trouble retaining the 20th Presidents Cup Sunday on the Androscoggin River, defeating every boat from Colby or Bowdoin in five different races.

With all five races counting equally in tabulating team points, Bates scored 22 points, followed by Colby (12) and Bowdoin (8).

Bates outrowed Colby 6:38.97 to 6:49.3 over the Bobcats' home 2,000-meter course in the WV8 race, with Bowdoin a distant third.

Bates fielded the top two boats in the W2V8 race, with Colby third.

Bowdoin challenged Bates in the closest race of the day, in varsity fours, but Bates still won by an 8.2-second margin, 7:20.1 to 7:28.3.

Bates also outrowed Bowdoin in the novice eights and outpaced Colby in novice fours.

Following the regatta and presentation of trophies from Bates President Clayton Spencer, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Bates' new boathouse.

The Bobcats will remain at home next Sunday to host Middlebury and the University of New Hampshire.
