LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates men's tennis team swept doubles play and won five out of six singles matches for an 8-1 non-conference victory over visiting Babson on Friday in Merrill Gymnasium.
Bates (1-3), recently returned from a three-match trip to California, picked up its first win of the season. Babson (0-1) played its season opener.
Bates sophomore Ben Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) and junior Chris Ellis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win over Victor Vu and Saif Rahim. Rosen and Ellis went on to 2-0 days with straight-sets wins at first and second singles, respectively. Rosen topped Roberto Perez at No. 1 singles 6-4 and Ellis defeated Vu 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
Babson earned a point at No. 3 singles, where Brandon Rosenbluth defeated Bates junior Fergus Scott (Wellington, New Zealand) in the only three-set singles match of the day, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Scott and junior captain Pat Ordway (Falmouth, Maine) defeated Perez and Rosenbluth 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Josh Leiner (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) won 8-5 at third doubles. Quijano also picked up a convincing two-set victory at No. 6 singles, and Ordway did the same at No. 5. Bates junior Brent Feldman (Waccabuc, N.Y.) defeated Rahim 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
