CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The No. 21 Bates men's tennis team battled No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a number of close matches but ultimately fell by a score of 9-0 to the defending national champions on Friday.

Two of the three doubles matches were quite close with Fergus Scott '18 (Wellington, New Zealand) and Patrick Ordway '17 (Falmouth, Maine) narrowly losing to Glenn Hull and Lestter Yeh by a score of 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles first-year Josh Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Josh Leiner '18 (Baltimore, Md.) gave Max Macey and Oliver Seifert all they could handle in a close 9-8 defeat.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The exception came at No. 6 singles where Quijano took Yeh to the wire, winning set two 6-2 to force a deciding set. Yeh barely hung on to win set three 7-6.

Although Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won all nine matches, it took them three hours and 45 minutes to do so as the Bobcats did not go down quietly.

Bates (0-2) is back in action Saturday as they take on Redlands at 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
