BEVERLY, Mass. -- Junior Andrew Melvin had a career-high eight points, including two goals and two assists in an 8-0 first-half run, as the No. 11 nationally ranked Bates men's lacrosse team won 14-10 at No. 19 Endicott College in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday night.

Senior Jack Allard (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored three goals with two assists, while sophomore Max Breschi (Carlisle, Pa.) added three goals and one assist, all in the decisive 8-0 streak by the Bobcats.

Senior Charlie Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa.) scored a pair of goals, senior Joe Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) made 15 saves and senior Matt Proto (Chatham, N.J.) scooped a team-high six ground balls for the Bobcats (1-0), whose last game was in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.

Endicott (0-1) got out to a 4-1 lead in the first five minutes and 16 seconds of the game until Breschi's first goal of the season, assisted by Allard with 3:56 to go in the first quarter, began Bates' eight unanswered scores.

Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) scored on an assist from sophomore Burke Smith (Wilton, Conn.) to close the gap to 4-3 before the end of the opening quarter. Melvin then tied the game with an unassisted tally in the opening minute of the secon quarter, and his second assist of the game led to a goal by junior Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), putting Bates in the lead for good at 5-4 with 13:10 to go in the second.

Breschi, making his first career start, added back-to-back goals on assists by sophomore Clarke Jones (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and junior Jake Walsh (Baltimore, Md.). After junior Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) scored on Melvin's third assist of the half, Breschi assisted Allard to make it 9-4 Bates with 4:37 to go in the half. 

Endicott finally ended the streak with a man-down goal by Colin Bannon, but the Bobcats took back their momentum before halftime as Melvin assisted Hildebrand's first goal.

Neither team scored in the opening nine minutes of the second half, until Melvin's fifth assist set up Allard's second goal for an 11-5 Bates advantage.

Endicott faced a 13-6 deficit with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, after Allard and Hildebrand both tallied unassisted goals to open the period. The Gulls responded with a 4-0 run over a span of three minutes and 22 seconds, closing the gap to 13-10 with 4:15 to go. 

Endicott sent two more shots, one saved by Faria, before Burke Smith forced an Endicott turnover and Bates cleared. With 90 seconds remaining, Melvin scored his third goal on only his fourth shot of the game, assisted by Allard, to finish off the scoring.

Colin Bannon, Will Jennings and Mitchell Tapley scored two goals apiece for Endicott; Bannon added two assists, while Peter Field Jr. collected a goal and three assists. Tommy Hughes won 19 of 28 faceoffs for the Gulls and had a game-high 13 ground balls. Cameron Bell made eight saves.

Bates next plays another non-conference road game, this Saturday at Roger Williams University (1pm).
